Spam Sites Registered with 20 Registrars Globally PDF Print E-mail

A latest research claims that over 3 quarters of total sites advertised through spam are grouped at only 10 domain name registrars and just 20 registrars globally register 90% of the total sites advertised in spam mails, as per the news reported by HEISE ONLINE on May 20, 2008.

The data is collected from thousands of junk mails gleaned in 2007 by Kunjon ("no junk" spelled backwards and pronounced "new john"). It is an anti-spam outlet that operates by convincing users to withdraw spam sites.

The registrars under criticism are Xinnet Bei Gon Da Software, BEIJINGNN and Todaynic, which stands at 18th, 47th and 99th position in the list of providers on the basis of global market share. In the list of 10 worst registrars by Knujon, the top positions are held by German registrar Joker (4th), Chinese and the remaining are Americans.

Garth Bruen, Co-founder of Knujon, said that the links of spam mails imitating fake designer products, pharmacies, phony software and organizations redirect the users towards a comparatively minuscule subset of Websites that are controlled by a small group of companies, as reported by Washingtonpost on May 20, 2008.

Garth draws the attention towards spam sites that give fake details in their records of WHOIS. WHOIS is defined as a nationwide directory made to name the contacts and data of users who register sites.

The analysis of the reign of spam shows that hackers usually make use of unauthentic registration information to save victims from catching them through WHOIS databases.

Besides, the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the Marina Del Rey, California-based group, accused with ignoring the domain name system, needs all the Web domain registrars to assemble and maintain correct WHOIS data for all the domain holders.

There are almost 800 ICANN-accredited registrars and several ISPs (Internet Service Providers). Most providers are following the rules and those who are not abiding by the rules are proving destructive for the web. Surprisingly, some of the providers did not pay much attention to verification and some takes part in illegal tasks. And Knujon is analyzing them.
